DeFi and the thousands of farmers it supports has yielded significant activity across our network. In fact, DeFi is one of the central drivers of Ethereum’s more than 1 million transactions per day!

Since DeFi has become one of the most popular use cases on Ethereum, we want to support the DeFi ecosystem in facilitating social governance so more users have agency in the construction of this brand new financial system.

Right now, most DeFi projects such as Yearn, Aave, and Compound have opted to use Discourse as their community communication platform of choice.

One of the biggest problems with Discourse is that it is chaotic and not at all meant for the facilitation of social governance. Just take a look at Yearn’s Discourse. While we appreciate what Andre has built and the fact their incredibly dedicated community members opted to create a Discourse page for Yearn, their Discourse page is not effectively solving the community’s social governance needs. There is little to any organization of thought, no place for structured debates and no effective ways for the community to have an in depth debate about what they want prior to an actual on-chain vote.

Now, this situation isn’t the fault of Yearn’s community. The Yearn community is working with what they have! They needed a debate platform and grabbed what was available. They made the right decision, as it is better to have some place where the community can congregate to discuss major protocol changes rather than nothing at all.

Yet, anyone who has participated in these forums must be saying to themselves, “there must be a better solution! A place more fit for social governance for our community, a place where we can more effectively debate YIPs and signal our preferences prior to actually voting on-chain.”

And they would be right! The Ether is built to support the social governance needs of projects such as Yearn, Compound, Aave, and any protocol built on top of Ethereum. Just as Ethereum was built to be the technical infrastructure supporting all dapps, The Ether will support all Ethereum based projects in their social governance needs.

As more and more projects rightfully decentralize their governance through the distribution of governance tokens, there is a dire need for a debate platform that supports these projects in facilitating their social governance processes. The Ether will support communities from Compound to Aave to Yearn to any other DeFi protocol, allowing those communities to more effectively discuss and debate the central issues their respective protocols face.
